A study on the traffic issues for the fishing boats at Lukut River

Abstract

Rivers are one of the most important. modes of transportation in the world. In Malaysia, the rivers are playing its best roles in the development of rural areas, economy of the country and lots more. This study was carried out to analyze the current situation at Lukut River and the impact of the situation to the local fishermen. Therefore, surveys via questionnaires have been carried out by distributing the questionnaire forms to four groups of people which are Marine Department, Fishery Department, fishermen and barge owners. Besides that, the statistics on movements of vessels at the Lukut River is also been collected from Marine Department. Finally, after analyzing the questionnaires answered by the four groups of people and the statistics, it is found that the current situation at the Lukut River is quiet hectic where the river is really crowded with many barges. This has caused troubles to the local fishermen communities to carry out their daily fishing activities besides imbalanced the surrounding ecosystem. Hence, the study will recommend the best ways to manage the situation and contribute towards smoother and safer traffic at the river especially at Lukut River for the local fishermen's convenience.
