MARPOL Annex IV is the international convention for the prevention of
pollution by sewage from ships. The convention consist 12 regulation divided
by four chapter. Taken into force in 27 September 2003 the convention
requires the members to comply with the regulation. In Malaysia MARPOL
Annex IV is implemented in 27 December 2010. Malaysia becomes the
member of the convention to protect Malaysia water from the pollution that
cause from sewage from ships. The decision to become the member of the
convention is very good, Because Malaysia is located in international trade
route and the number of ship that using Malaysia water is increase by year.
The implementation of MARPOL Annex IV in Malaysia may give some impact
to the Malaysia maritime industry. The implementation is actually give
impact to the maritime industry player such as shipping company, port
sector and government agencies. Because the convention is new in Malaysia,
there are no studies regarding the impact of the implementation to the
maritime industry especially its player. Therefore this study was conducted
to determine the impact of implementation of MARPOL Annex IV to Malaysia
Maritime Industry. The impact is measure by the changes of the operation of
shipping company, port and government agencies . The data regarding the
operation changes is taken by the interview with the involve parties. The
study also measure the availability of sewage reception facilities in port and
sewage treatment plant onboard the ships. data collection regarding number
of ship enter Malaysia port, ship detail and ship certificate information from
related sector in this study like shipping company, port and government
agencies. At the end, all the gathered data is analyse and then determine
the impact of implementation of the convention and some recommendation
is make to provide the party involve |
