This report is to identify the causes and effects of the shortage of marine pilot. The objectives are to determine the cause of the shortage of pilot and to investigate the impacts of shortage on port operation which are berthing and unberthing and human aspects, fatigue. Questionnaires are used to collect field
data. These questionnaires are distributed to the marine pilot Northport (Malaysia) Bhd that is 33 persons. Fortunately, all of them completed the questionnaires. Then, the data analyzed using SPSS and Microsoft Excel. The result proved that the most causes of the shortage of marine pilot is lack of incentives which is allowance, bonus, house, vehicle and others at the highest
(mean 4.06) and it follow by the others factors. Low salary (mean=3.97J Better salary and benefit working in shipping company (mean 3.91J better salary and benefit working onboard (mean=3.88), Higher requirements and experience of
becoming marine pilot (mean=3.76) and lastly bad working condition (mean=3.63). Meanwhile the effects of the shortage of marine pilot are marine pilot will get fatigue due to the long working hours or unpredictable working hours. Besides that, there also have other causes and effects of the shortage of
the marine pilot. Whereby the effects of the shortage of marine pilot is fatigue due to the long working hours or unpredictable working hours with mean 4.06. Mean of the rest are unpredictable working hours (mean=3.94), shortage of marine pilot may effects to the port delays (mean=3.88), lastly long working hours or unsociable hours (mean=3.79). |
