Abstract:
In some country, water transportation has becomes the main
transport in connecting them with other side of the world. Similar to Pankor
Island in Perak, the only way to reach the island is by ferries and airplane.
Most people choosing ferries service to travel to the island since it cheaper
and the service is flexible in time. However, do the ferries service safe
enough to be operating and does it follow the regulation lay down by
Malaysian Government? The purpose of this study is to identify the safety
level of passenger ferry operation in Lumut, Perak as well as to discuss the
level of concern by the authority, ferry owners and the passengers toward
the safety of passenger ferries. In achieving the objective of this research,
survey and interview session using questionnaires have been done with the
authority, ferry owners and ferry passengers. The questions asked are
related to the safety equipment, information and warning onboard ferry,
awareness of ferry passengers, crew competency and issues onboard ferry.
This research will help to improve the safety of passenger ferries and
hoping the authority, ferry owners and passengers will be more
conscientious and aware about safety regulations onboard a ferry.
