Abstract:
The main international convention regulating the protection of
the seas against pollution is MARPOL 73/78. Annex V-MARPOL 73/78
provides regulations regarding handling and disposal on-board
generated garbage. Further there are national laws and regulations
dealing with the same subject, strictly enforced. However in
Malaysia, Annex V-MARPOL 73/78 only implemented for merchant
shipping. There is no Garbage Management Plan on-board domestic
fishing vessel. The study to develop Garbage Management Plan for
domestic fishing vessel should be carried out for the purpose of
pollution prevention. The project adopts the methods of site survey
which the survey checklist question have been distribute among
fisherman. The objectives of the study are to view the current status
of garbage management plan for domestic fishing vessel, to develop
garbage management plan for domestic fishing vessel, and to
determine the level of awareness of fisherman about garbage
management plan onboard fishing vessel. The Environmental Quality
Act 1974, Law of Malaysia and Part IV Protection and Preservation of
the Marine Environment, Exclusive Economic Zone 1984, had been
discussed in the literature review. For the methodology, the primary
resources will be obtained through the site survey checklist question
and field observation. Then, the secondary resources will be obtained
through publication, journal, articles, thesis, and text related to the
case study. The descriptive analysis of survey question is carried out
according to the section A, B, C, and D.
